Lelmi began his career in Italy around 1853 and finished it in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied singing with maestro Pietro Romani. He moved to South America around 1854.

He sang at the Colón up to 1870 and as guest until 1876.

After retiring, Lelmi remained in Buenos Aires. He was so popular that in 1890, he was nominated inspector of Buenos Aires' theaters.

Na estação de 1854 (empresa do maestro Antogini, que também aqui esteve em 1851), vieram o tenor Luigi Lelmi que mais tarde se celebrizou, conquistando as maiores glorificações nas principais, platéias da Europa e América, e o baixo Stefano Scapini, que deixou entre nós o mais refulgente nome, como intérprete notável do papel de átila, nessa ópera de Verdi.

Bergamaschi, Francesco Fiorani, Antonio de Santis, Luigi Lelmi, Aristide Trinci, Thomás, Villa, Tansini e Molla.
Tansini e Lelmi tornaram-se, mais tarde, celebridades artísticas, conquistando extraordinárias ovações nos principais teatros da Europa e América, especialmente no Rio de Janeiro, onde cantaram por várias vezes.

In December 1870, Carlota Patti (nicknamed "the lame Patti"), sister of the better known Adelina Patti, gave three recitals at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago (Chile): 1, 4 and 8 December. The other artists were the famous Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate, pianist Teodoro Ritter and tenor Vicente Antenor.

The night of December 8th (after the concert) a fire reduced the theatre to ashes.

In 1871 and 1872 (while a new theatre was being built) there was no opera in Santiago.

The new Municipal opened on July 16th, 1873 with the first performance (premiere) in Chile of Verdi's "La forza del destino" with tenor Luigi Lelmi as Alvaro.

Somente em 1876, no Teatro São José, aconteceu uma verdadeira Temporada Lírica. Dez das óperas mais correntes foram apresentadas, algumas delas repetidas a preçs promocionais em apresentaçóes vespertinas. Um tenor apreciado no Teatro Colón, Luigi Lelmi, cantou quase todos os papés de tenor, um feiro extraordinário, que foi muito considerado. Luigi Lemi também conquistou o coraçáo do público local.

O 1o tenor absoluto Luigi Lelmi fôra por vários anos o ídolo do público do antigo Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires. Adquirira grande autoridade cénica e a nossa plateia nele conheceu os ademanes de um divo de ópera. Lelmi cantou quase tôdas as récitas da temporada, desde a Traviata, e o Rigoletto até o Ernani e o Trovatore, deixando ao seu colega Leopoldo Signoretti apenas o Barbiere di Siviglia e o Poliuto.
