Daniel Houbrechts

Picture of Daniel Houbrechts

Daniel Houbrechts singsLe vagabond tzigane (Lopez): Je suis un musicien, un romani, un vagabond

Since the first half of the 1980s, he was a comprimario with the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, singing roles like Pong, Capitano (Simon Boccanegra), Don Basilio (Nozze di Figaro), Itulbo (Pirata), Hadji (Lakmé), Nicias (Thaïs) or Nick (Fanciulla del West). He also sang such roles in Verviers. In 1995, he participated in a concert performance of I lombardi alla prima crociata at the Theaterhotel Oranjerie in Roermond (Netherlands). And he even had a main role in the Walloon opera Amours di prince by Joseph Duysenx (Théâtre du Trianon, Liège, 2001).

He must have stayed at the Liège Opéra Royal into the 2000s; after that, he sang operetta for 15 or 20 more years, both in concert and in staged performances, at the smaller theaters of Liège (Trianon, Centre de Variétés), at the Sébastopol in Lille, but often in places at the back of beyond: Nivelle, Ath, Waremme, Estampuis, Beaugency... He was also, still in 2008, Monostatos in a Zauberflöte in Walloon dialect at the Trianon in Liège (obviously, the Dutch name notwithstanding, his native language is French, or the could hardly master the Walloon dialect).
