Studied voice at the Berlin academy of music. Debut in Koblenz 1924; after one season each in Mainz and Bremen, he was in Karlsruhe from 1927 to 1930, 1930–33 at the Berlin Staatsoper, 1933–36 in Stuttgart.

From 1936 to 1946, he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera; he stayed in the USA, and retired to California in the early 1950s. Guest appearances (most of them in his New York period): San Francisco, St. Louis, London, Monte Carlo, Strasbourg, Munich, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires.

He was a comprimario throughout his career: both Mimes, David, Steuermann, Monostatos, Jacquino, Ägisth...
