He studied voice in his home town with Max Roth (whose daughter he married) and Fritz Windgassen.

He began in 1938 in Freiburg; 1941/42 Düsseldorf, 1942–49 Hamburg, 1949–76 Stuttgart, where he enjoyed great popularity.

He was always a comprimario and impressed, not least, by his acting abilities. Important roles: Jacquino, Monostatos, Pedrillo, Mime, David, Don Basilio (Nozze), Vašek, Peter Iwanow (Zar und Zimmermann), Doctor Cajus, Valzacchi. He also sang a lot of 20th century music, and participated in several world premieres.
