He studied at the conservatory of his hometown, at the Salzburg Mozarteum, with Max Lorenz, and with Enzo Mascherini in Milano. His debut was in 1962 at the Bregenz Festival, as Lorenzo in Fra Diavolo. For the next two years, he was a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, then of the Zürich opera until 1978. Guest appearances at the Salzburg Festival, in Lisbon, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, at the Paris Opéra, in Brussels, Amsterdam, Geneva, Rome or Glyndebourne.

Van Vrooman was basically a comprimario, but also sang lead roles sometimes (such as Belmonte in Glyndebourne, 1968). He also sang a lot of oratorio and sacred music.
