He studied voice at the University of Southern California as well as with Martial Singher, Horst Günter and Margaret Harshaw. In 1982, he won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. He had a contract with the Basel opera theater from 1983 to 1987 (guest appearances as Don Carlo at the Paris Opéra in 1986), and the Munich State Opera from 1987 to 1991. Then he was in high enough demand to go on as a freelancer: Opera Hamilton (Canada), Frankfurt, Arizona Opera, Connecticut Opera in Hartford. In 2002, he was hired by the New York Met, where he sang until 2008 (25 performances in ten different roles). He also sang at theaters throughout the US (e.g. Houston, Atlanta), and in the French provinces.
