Picture of Fritz Uhl

Uhl studied with the well-known Vienna voice teacher Elisabeth Rado, and already during that time toured the Netherlands with an operetta troupe. He made his operatic debut as Faust in 1952 at the tiny theater of Leoben (it's amazing that they ever staged opera there!), singing in Graz for the following season. 1953/54 in Lucerne, 1954–56 in Oberhausen, 1956–58 in Wuppertal. In 1958 (or 1956?), he was hired by the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where he stayed until 1975 as a member and until 1989 as a guest.

Many guest appearances all over the world: Vienna, Stuttgart, Bayreuth (Loge 1958, Erik 1959–61, Siegmund 1961–64, plus a few small roles 1957–59), Salzburg Festival, Covent Garden, Théâtre de la Monnaie, Teatro Colón, Paris Opéra, Maggio Musicale, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Barcelona, Lisbon, Mexico City, San Francisco, Osaka and so on.

From 1981, he taught voice in Vienna.
