Carrara obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Genova while also studying voice at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milano. He started working at a law firm, but then decided to make singing his profession.

Debut as Ernesto at the Spoleto Festival in 1986; he made a career in roles like Rodolfo, Riccardo, Alfredo, Gabriele Adorno, Oronte (I lombardi alla prima crociata), Roberto Devereux, Duca, Edgardo, Pinkerton, Rinuccio, Boito's Faust or even Don José, appearing in Piacenza, Bern, Basel, Genova, Hamburg, Mannheim, Wiesbaden, Düsseldorf and Duisburg, Geneva, Torino, Dresden, Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Torre del Lago, Iesi, Marseille, Essen or Santiago de Chile. At La Scala, he sang Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor in 1992.

He finished his solo career in 2002 or 2004 (depending on sources), and entered the chorus of La Scala.

Already from 1989, and still when already retired from La Scala, he was an avid local politician in his native Pietra Ligure.
