A pupil of Salvatore Salvati, Lega made his career primarily in Germany: 1961/62 Oberhausen (where he made his debut as Pinkerton), 1962–64 Saarbrücken, 1964–73 Wuppertal; then he continued as a freelancer, singing at most of the major German theaters (Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Kassel, Hannover, Wiesbaden, Düsseldorf-Duisburg, Cologne, Frankfurt). Other than in Germany, he also sang a lot in the Netherlands (primarily in Amsterdam), and made guest appearances at the Teatre del Liceu and the Vienna Staatsoper, in Graz, Rio de Janeiro, Basel, Palermo, Rome and Trieste.

His repertory included Alfredo, Duca, Rodolfo, Herodes, Italienischer Sänger, Edgardo, Cavaradossi, Jacopo Foscari, Riccardo, Don José, Turiddu, Manrico, Radames, Don Carlo, Andrea Chénier, Canio, Puccini's des Grieux and Florestan.
