After studies with Marcello and Mario Del Monaco, Sebastian made his debut at La Fenice in Venice in 1969 in Belisario. In his early years, he would sing comprimario parts at important Italian theaters, including La Scala, but roused considerable interest when stepping in successfully for Nicolai Gedda as Arnold at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1972.

Gradually, his roles grew bigger: Pinkerton (1975 Palermo), Cavaradossi (1976 Brussels), Arnold again (1976 Dijon). And he sang a lot internationally: Cape Town (1981 and 1983), Caracas (1981), Enschede (1978, 1980 and 1982), Vienna State Opera (1984, 1991 and 1993), Athens (1985), Rio de Janeiro (1986), Metropolitan Opera (1986/87; contrary to Kutsch & Riemens, he never sang Manrico there, but Radames and Cavaradossi), Chicago (1986), Boston (1987), Seattle (1987), Barcelona (1987), Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1987), Prague (1988, 2000 and 2001), Arena di Verona (1988), Basel (1988), Terme di Caracalla in Rome (1990), Zürich (1990), Adelaide (1990), both Berlin opera houses (1991 and 1996), Köln (1996).

His repertory also included: Manrico, Calaf, Canio, Don Carlo, Macduff, Dufresne (Zazà), Samson, Riccardo, Otello, Chénier, Turiddu, Edgardo, Gabriele Adorno, Steuermann or Narraboth.
