José Lesens

By the very few who still remember him at all, José Lesens is regularly mixed up with José Lens – two Belgian tenors, almost identical names, identical period of activity, and ten times in 1930, they even appeared on the stage of La Monnaie on the same evening, Lens as Turiddu, Lesens as Canio. 1929/30 was Lesens' only season at La Monnaie; other than Canio, he sang Narraboth, Lucius (in Katharina by Edgar Tinel) and Vincent there. The rest of his career was spent in Gent, and above all in Antwerp, where he regularly appeared at the Royal Flemish Opera between 1936 and 1949.
