Born in Tuna, Sweden in 1888, Gustav Harald Lindau sang as a youth as a soloist in his native area, and in a "popular music" trio.

He later travelled to Italy, where he studied opera and began his career that took him, over the next thirty years, around the world to most of the major and minor opera houses and auditoriums.

Gradually the Italianate form of his name emerged on programs: Aroldo Lindi, and that's how he was known for the rest of his life and career.

Lindi sang at Covent Garden, La Scala, the Chicago, Boston and San Francisco opera theaters and other major venues in the 1920s, together with Eva Turner, Margaret Burke-Sheridan, Rosetta Pampanini, Gianna Arangi-Lombardi, Gina Cigna, Claudia Muzio and Maria Jeritza.

Later on, Lindi was the star tenor with the Fortune Gallo's touring San Carlo Opera Company in the 1930s and until his death in 1944. Lindi sang in the Turandot premieres in Barcelona, Pisa and Chicago, soon after the world premiere.

He was also part of the festivities of the opening of Radio City Music Hall in 1932. While singing Radames in Cairo in the late 1920s, he was presented with one of the original handmade costumes for that character, from the 1871 premiere.

Lindi died in 1944 at age 55 onstage in San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, during a performance of Pagliacci, singing Vesti la giubba.

I wish to thank Richard Lindau who confirmed that Lindi was singing in Boston in 1916 with the Fleck Opera Company. The information was gathered from newspapers clippings, an article in the Swedish American Monthly of January 1937, and Fortune Gallo's autobiography Lucky Rooster. Mr. Lindau further confirmed that Lindi also sang Pinkerton, as it was reported by his mother who heard Lindi in that role.
