Xu Chang
Born in north-east China (Jilin province), he studied voice in Beijing and Tokyo, and became a member of
the theater in Ulm, where he made his debut in 2001 as Alfredo. From 2006, he was a leading (and locally very successsful)
tenor in Meiningen for many years, singing for instance Manrico, Riccardo, Arnold, Don Ottavio, Sou-Chong, Don Alvaro,
Rodolfo, Canio, Ernesto, Edgardo, Duca, Andrea Chénier, Guglielmo (Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali,
Luzio (Das Liebesverbot), Turiddu, Arturo (Puritani) – most everything on the theater's repertoire, as
it's typically the case with troupe members at small theaters.
Guest appearances for instance in Eisenach, Biel, Tel Aviv, Las Palmas, Tartu/Estonia (Manrico, 2008). In Krakow, he sang the
title role in a 2011 concert performance of Pierre de Médicis by Józef Michał Ksawery Poniatowski
(1816–73). Concerts in places like Lengenfeld im Vogtland, Suhl or on Gutenberg Castle (Liechtenstein); in 2007, he sang
in Verdi's Requiem at Aachen Cathedral.
In the early 2020s, he was back to China, still active as a singer.
