His name is sometimes also written Gougalov in Latin letter.
Petar Gougaloff began his studies with Christo Brambarov in Bulgaria and then in Germany with Helge Rosvaenge
and Rudolf Dresslmair. His debut at the Berlin State Opera came in 1960 as Turiddu. After singing in Brunswick, he returned
to the Berlin State Opera in 1965 and began a long career there.
Since 1976, he was a member of the German Opera Berlin. He appeared with the Sofia National Opera,
the Prague Opera and the Paris Opéra.
Additional engagements took him to Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Zürich and the Bolshoi in Moscow.
In the United States, he appeared with the
San Francisco Opera. He was a guest soloist at the festivals of Edinburgh and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
