Monsieur Magdeleine
For Magdeleine, I find only very scarce evidence (and no first name). In February 1921, he participated in a concert in Cluny (which is,
as far as classical music, really at the back of beyond); on that occasion, he was announced as a member of the Lyon opera house. But no
available reviews or playbills testify to Magdeleine's activity in Lyon. In 1923, he made his few recordings for the "Opéra" company,
and the labels indicate that he sang at the Nice opera house at that time. But again, no news on Magdeleine from Nice proper. On 9
September 1924, he appeared in a pioneer radio concert on the program of the "Association des Radio-Amateurs Français" in Paris, and
was announced as "ténor de l'Opéra", which has to be the Paris Opéra, of course. But definitely, no Magdeleine ever
appeared at the Opéra in any solo part, not even a secondary one. Certainly, he may have been mislabeled; but always? For all three
Opéras, Lyon, Nice and Paris? Given also his vocal stature, I'm rather inclined to think that he was a chorister at the respective
theaters.
