I would like to thank Vladimir Efimenko for the recording and pictures.
I would like to thank Michal Pekárek for the recording and the picture.
I would like to thank Thomas Silverbörg for the recording.
Jiří Zahradníček began in an opera choir, first solo tasks were mostly buffo roles,
but when he found his real voice in Paganini by Lehár and as Smetana's Jíra (in Braniboři v
Čechách), he quickly became one of the leading Czech singers of Italian
operas. He was at his best in Italian music, but according to his collegues he was
also good in operas by Wagner, Smetana, Janáček and modern operas.
His voice was beautiful placed and his technique allowed him to sing four
difficult tenor roles in one week, not counting concerts.
As a chorister, he sang in Liberec (1941–45), while still studying voice; as a soloist, still in
Liberec (1945–53), then in Opava
(1953–59), Ostrava (1959–63), Bratislava (1964–69). In the first half of 1970, he sang in Oslo, then he was
engaged by the Prague National Theater (until 1990 as a regular member, until 1998 as a guest in mostly comprimario parts).
