Dan Beddoe

16 March 1863 Ameraman (Wales) – 26 December 1937 New York City

Working in a mine, he won the amateur singing competition at the 1892 National Eisteddfod (the huge annual Welsh festival). Before long, he emigrated to the US, and studied voice in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. He started singing in concert; in 1903, Walter Damrosch hired him for a Carnegie Hall performance of the Requiem by Berlioz; that was the start of a very successful oratorio career. Enrico Caruso admired him.

Beddoe never sang opera on stage, but he did so in concert performances (notably on a Parsifal tour with the New York Philharmonic and Walter Damrosch in 1904).

Beddoe's career lasted long; he only retired after a car accident in 1935 – at age 72.
