I've just remembered that I was unfortunate enough to hear and see US tenor Paul Austin Kelly...
He came to Chile, to sing in Santiago, Teatro Municipal. He sang five performances of Donizetti's "Lucrezia Borgia" with an international cast that included soprano Christine Weidinger, mezzosoprano Ildikó Komlósi and bass Giovanni Furlanetto. The conductor was Maurizio Benini. It was the first (and last) time that this opera was given in the 20th century and the performances took place in October and November of 1993.
None of the singers was really outstanding but they managed to go through the difficult score, except, of course, the tenor (Mr. Kelly) who was unable to render justice to the role of Gennaro. His "Di pescatore ignobile" was indeed "ignobile" (unnoble).

When I heard him in Zelmira together with Workman as Antenore. I wrote the following:
The better of the two is Antenore, sung by William Workman. Workman has a quite agreeable, audible voice for the villain part. But this role was an outstanding one for the Chris Merrritt of the good old days, before he destroyed his voice with Arnold, and Workman is a quite an harmless villain, but he does not distract from the quality of the performance. Ilo, the good guy if I may say, is sung by Paul Austin Kelly, a tenorino with not much voice and very unpleasant high notes. A complete failure. Incredible that he has a worldwide career.
