Hughes Macklin

April 1886 Talysarn – 22 June 1936 Whitley Bay

Welsh tenor Hughes Macklin (real name: George Macklin) spent his career with British touring opera companies, most notably the Carl Rosa Company, where he sang continuously from 1915 into the late 1920s.

His repertory ranged from Almaviva to Radamès, and included Hoffmann, Don José, Gounod's Faust, Dominique in L'attaque du moulin, Wilhelm Meister, Hardress Cregan in Lily of Killarney, Manrico, Riccardo, Rodolfo, Cavaradossi, Pinkerton, Turiddu, Canio or Lohengrin.

At the end of his career, he appeared in two musical films: Lily of Killarney (1934) and Melody of my heart (1936). Macklin was also a prolific recording artist, leaving almost 100 sides on Columbia and Edison.
