Born somewhere in Kent (information as to the exact place is nowhere to be found), Müller sang in the famous choir of New College at
Oxford University from 1977 to 1981. Then he studied voice, above all with Thomas Lo Monaco
in New York City.
He made his debut in 1985 with Kent Opera in Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne, but he was primarily to be a concert tenor,
specializing in lute-accompanied medieval and Renaissance music, in German and French lieder and in oratorio, with successful appearances
in many European countries.
Onto the operatic stage, he would venture only occasionally; not always in main roles, and mostly in Händel (Acis and Galatea,
Poro, Rodrigo) and in Zauberflöte (Tamino, Erster Priester, Erster Geharnischter), either at festivals (Halle
an der Saale, Göttingen, Garsington) or at very small theaters (Little Opera Theatre of New York, Opera Atelier in Toronto).
He had a very long career; in 2024, he was still performing. From 2006, he taught at Bard College in the state of New York.
