After studies at King's College in Cambridge and at the Guildhall School in London, Padmore graduated in 1982.
He sang a lot of lieder recitals (including a lot of contemporary composers) and oratorio (particularly Bach) on the one hand; on the
other, on stage, he almost limited himself to baroque opera. He sang in concert with all major orchestras; in opera, he appeared at
the Aix-en-Provence, Göttingen, Halle an der Saale and Edinburgh festivals, at Covent Garden and the English National Opera, in
Paris (Opéra, Opéra-Comique, Théâtre Châtelet), Stuttgart, Lisbon, Florence or Glasgow. His roles
included Hippolyte (Hippolyte et Aricie by Rameau), Amour (Castor et Pollux by Rameau), Bajazet (Tamerlano by Händel), Jason
(Médée by Charpentier), Apollo (Orfeo by Monteverdi), Spirit (Dido and Aeneas by Purcell) and Admète (Alceste by
Gluck).
He had a long career; at the time of writing (2023), he is still performing frequently.
