Léon Campagnola
At the conservatory of Marseille, he was trained as a baritone; further studies in Paris made him become a
tenor. He made his debut in Versailles as Vincent (1903), then sang in Belgium (Mons, Gent, Antwerp) and Geneva for the next
few years. In 1908, he returned to France, singing in Tours, Toulouse, Toulon and Nîmes, and in 1910 arrived at the
Paris Opéra, where his debut role was Roméo; he sang also Duca there, Gounod's Faust, Armel (in Gwendoline
by Chabrier), David, and Gennaro (I gioielli della Madonna).
In 1913, he went to the US (Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles), only to return to France when World War I broke out, appearing in
Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse or Bordeaux until 1926.
After retiring, he was a voice teacher, and a painter.
