André Goavec
6 February 1897 Le Havre – 17 February 1947 Nice

He studied voice at the conservatory in Paris and basically spent his career at the Opéra-Comique, though with excursions
into the French provinces. He was always undecided between singing tenor or singing (bass-)baritone: he made his debut in 1922 as
the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly (a bass-baritone part), then sang tenor roles for the next few years, and then
returned to being a bass-baritone from 1931 onwards. Beyond that, he sang lots of secondary and only a few main roles, which reduces
his output as far as tenor lead roles considerably: Pinkerton, Cavaradossi, Sid El Kar in Romberg's Desert song (a huge
success for Goavec at the Eldorado in Nice) and the title role in Le bon roi Dagobert by Marcel Samuel-Rousseau (in Cannes).
He retired early, and was a hotel manager in Nice until his death.
