When he was 12 years old, Lara sang in an amateur company. At twenty, Lara entered the Bordeaux conservatory in the class of André Dran.

From 1976 to 1978, he sang at the Lille opera appearing in Faust, Nabucco, Prince Igor, Thaïs, Dialogues des carmélites, Das Land des Lächelns.

In 1979, he won the voix d'or competition.

He further studied singing at the Paris Opéra in 1979 with Michel Sénéchal. The same year, Lara sang at the Champs-Élysées as Mitrane in Semiramide and at the Opéra in Lear (Diener).

The next year, he sang at La Fenice Juan in Don Quichotte.

From then on, he sang all over France as well outside the country: Festival de Saint Céré (Alfredo, Hoffmann, Ismaele), at the Nantes Opéra (Rodolfo), at the Grand Théâtre in Limoges (Alfredo, Hoffmann), at the Opéra Grand in Avignon (Cavaradossi), in Antwerp (Faust), Gent (Faust) and Brugge (Faust).

In the 1986/87 season, he sang at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg Faust and Turiddu.

In the 1987/88 season, he sang in Nice (José), Berlin (Theater des Westens as Sou Chong), Liège (Hoffmann), and Tel-Aviv (José). In 1989, he was in Köln (José, Faust).

He sang in Strasbourg in Samson and in Grisélidis in 1990, Andrej Khovanskij in 1992.

In 1990, Samson in Karlstuhe and in 1991, Ruggiero (La rondine) in Tours.

In 1990, Lara sang Faust at the Wiener Staatsoper on 23 and 26 December.

In 1992, he sang Jean in Hérodiade at the Opéra de Wallonie in Liège.

His repertory also included: Angélo (L'opéra d'Aran), Roméo, Pinkerton, Duca, ...

Occasionally, he appeared on stage until 2019!
