Raymond Malvasio

21 November 1909 Fontenay-sous-Bois – December 1987

Raymond Malvasio singsLes Indes galantes: Pour jamais l'amour nous engage, with Camille Maurane and Irène Joachim

From a family of artists, he was to become a painter, but in 1933, he started training his voice instead at the Paris conservatory. In 1937, he made his debut in a supporting part in Lakmé at the Opéra-Comique. He stayed at that theater for ten years. The rest of his career was spent at the large provincial opera theaters of France: Marseille, Bordeaux, Lyon, Toulouse, Nice, Strasbourg, Lille, Toulon... He also appeared in Belgium, Switzerland and Algeria, and sang a lot in the concert hall and on the radio.

He sang all kinds of roles, large and small, but was considered a specialist for comprimario parts: Pedrillo, Don Basilio (Nozze di Figaro), Nathanael (Les contes d'Hoffmann), Parpignol... however, he sang also Rodolfo, Faust, Vincent, Don José, Mylio, Julien, Pinkerton or Cavaradossi.

From 1969 to 1976, Malvasio was back at the Opéra-Comique – this time as a stage director.
