Born in Toulouse, François Mario entered the musical world as a prize winner of a tenor competition organized by the "Musica"
magazine after studies with Jean de Reszke. The principal theaters where he sang were Algiers (1908–22), and in Paris both the
Gaîté-Lyrique and the Opéra-Comique, where he made his debut on 16 September 1910 as Rodolfo, and sang also Jean
Bérard (Les fugitifs by André Fijan), Turiddu, Pinkerton, Araquil (La Navarraise), Cavaradossi, Canio and
Tebaldo (L'ancêtre by Saint-Saëns), plus he participated in the world premieres of Ernest Bloch's Macbeth (30
November 1910, as Malcolm) and La jota by Raoul Laparra (26 April 1911, as Chanteur de coplas). He sang at the Opéra-Comique
until at least 1922.
Other than that, he also appeared in Casablanca, Cherbourg, Lyon, Toulon (1922/23), Marseille, Nîmes, Monte Carlo, Nice, Toulouse,
Angoulême, Bordeaux, Bourges (where he sang, for instance, in Gismonda by Février in June 1926), Troyes, Amiens, Lille,
Le Havre, La Rochelle, Vals-les-Bains or at the Théâtre Français in Antwerp (1913/14). Already by the mid-1920s, he
sang on the radio. The last notice that I found on him is the announcement of a small-scale concert in Paris on 28 September 1935.
Mario never sang any operetta, it would seem – opera only, from Duca di Mantova and Alfredo to Don José and Jean in
Hérodiade, including some works that are now considered rarities like Benjamin Godard's La vivandière or the
above-mentioned Ancêtre.
