Charles Rousselière

17 January 1875 Saint-Nazaire-d'Aude – 22 March 1950 Joué-lès-Tours
Rousselière was born Roussoulière. His parents wanted him to become a priest. He therefore was sent to a seminary. His only entertainment was singing on Sunday at church. However his behaviour at school forced his parents to take him out, and they sent him to college. But his parents could not afford for long to pay for his studies, and he was sent to a wine broker to study accounting.

His father was appointed to a position at the Compagnie de l'Ouest Algérien at Sidi-Bel-Abbès. There he studied to be a lathe operator.

His parents' friends encouraged him to perfect his singing. His brothers paid for his trip from Sidi-Bel-Abbès to Paris. First he did not like the city and after a short stay, he returned to Algeria. The following year, he accepted to return to Paris. To make ends meet, he sang at the café-concert Le petit ramponneau. He finally managed to get accepted at the conservatory.

There his teachers were three tenors: Edmond Vergnet (singing), Adolphe Girardot (opera) and Léon Achard (opéra-comique).

Despite poor results at the final competition in 1898, he managed to get hired. He first sang in Tournai (not verified). On February 25th, 1900 he sang at the Concerts Lamoureux in Paris the final of Siegfried with Alba Chrétien-Vaguet. It is also rumored that he sang La vision de Dante and Le baptême de Clovis at the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.

On August 26th and 29th, 1900 at the Arènes de Béziers, he sang in Prométhée as Andros with Caroline Fiérens-Peters, Rosa Feldy, Fonteix/Duc (29 August), Jean Vallier, de Max, Cora Laparcerie-Richepin, Odette de Fehl and Charles Eustace.

Pedro Gailhard hired him for the Opéra where he made his debut as Samson on October 5th, 1900 with Meyrianne Héglon, Jean Noté, François Delpouget, Léon Gresse, Galois, Lacôme, Laurent and Paul Taffanel.

Rousselière stayed at the Opéra until 1905 and reappeared briefly in 1909 and 1912. During his stay, he added to his repertory Faust, Aida, Il trovatore, Die Walküre, Salammbô, Pagliacci, Roméo et Juliette, Freischütz and took part in the premieres of Les barbares as Le veilleur and Daria as Boris.

In 1905, Rousselière appeared for the first time in Monte Carlo where he took part in the world premiere of Amica on March 16th with Geraldine Farrar, Maurice Renaud, Henri-Alexis Lequien, Paola Rainaldi, and Mascagni. Rousseliére recorded an aria from Amica, singing in Italian.
On June 3rd, 1905 he sang at the Opéra-Comique in concert (to the benefit of the Caisse de retraite des artistes de l'orchestre) with Marie Thiéry in the "Duo des alouettes" from Roméo et Juliette.
On August 5th, 1905 he also sang at the Théâtre Antique d'Orange in Les Troyens à Carthage with Félia Litvinne, and Chassang.

He was back in Monte Carlo singing in L'ancêtre on 27 February 1906 with Maurice Renaud, Henri-Alexis Lequien, Félia Litvinne, Geraldine Farrar, Marie Charbonnel, Léon Jehin.
He created Le clown by Isaac de Camondo at the Nouveau Théâtre in Paris on April 22nd, 1906 with Geraldine Farrar, Maurice Renaud and Jean-François Delmas. Research in Noël et Stoullig for 1906 did not display any information on the Nouveau Théâtre in the table of contents. Researching this yielded that the Nouveau Théâtre was purchased by the French actress Réjane and its name was changed to Théâtre Réjane in 1906 after the creation of Le clown. Consulting again Noël et Stoullig for 1906 yielded under Théâtre Réjane the confirmation of the creation.

In the 1906/07 season, Rousselière sang with the Metropolitan Opera company. He made his debut in Roméo et Juliette on November 11th, 1906 with Farrar, Simard, Plançon, Jacoby, Journet, Bars, Mühlmann, Bégué and Bovy. During his stay he sang in La damnation de Faust, Lakmé, Faust, Carmen, Pagliacci, and some concerts. With the company, he also sang in Philadelphia. His last appearance was as Canio on February 8th, 1907. It seems that he was not that successful during his season at the Met.

He had a great singing career not only in France but also Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, USA, South America, ... It is possible that when he was in South America, he sang in cities other than Buenos Aires, while he does not seem to have sung in Brazil. There is also a big gap during the First World War and the end of his career in 1920/21, a gap that is not well documented.

His career evolved as follows
1900 Béziers, Paris
1901 Paris
1902 Paris
1903 Paris
1904 Paris
1905 Paris, Monte Carlo, Orange
1906 Monte Carlo, New York, Philadelphia

1913 Monte Carlo, Paris, Bruxelles

He was married three times. In 1901, he married Jeanne Suzanne Huchet a soprano with whom he recorded duos. On March 17th, 1934 he married Françoise Maria Estelle Dhôtel until March 22nd, 1948. Shortly before his death, he married Geneviève Trégant on August 13th, 1949.
