Carl Lippert-Schroth
28 October 1883 Saarlouis – 8 July 1959
Carl Lippert-Schroth was born into an artist family: both his mother and his grandmother were theater directors,
his grandfather was an actor. Actor was also Lippert-Schroth's first profession: in Mulhouse, Freiburg, and eventually in
Leipzig, where he met Jacques Urlus, took voice lessons – and made a second debut as an operatic tenor in 1908.
His first name, by the way, regularly appears also in the more modern orthography as Karl, while he often shortened
his family name to Schroth only.
He stayed at the Leipzig opera theater until 1914, then he went on to Augsburg. In 1915, he interrupted his career to fight
WWI.
1919–21, he sang in Freiburg, 1921/22 at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, 1922–24 again in Leipzig, but
this time at the operetta theater. Then he spent a few years as a freelancer, before accepting contracts in Brno/Brünn
(1928/29), Coburg (1929/30), at the Corso-Theater in Zürich (1930–32), at the Vienna Volksoper (1932–34),
and in Piła/Schneidemühl (1934–38). At the two latter theaters, he was both a stage director and a singer. The last
few years of his career (until 1941), he was an actor again, in Piła/Schneidemühl and Coburg.
In opera, he specialized in the lighter heldentenor repertory (Lohengrin, Parsifal); in operetta, he was a successful
Barinkay or Goethe (in Friederike by Lehár).
