He began in Düsseldorf in the 1921/22 season; his next 15 years were spent in the provinces: Bielefeld, Mönchengladbach, Oldenburg, Münster, Dortmund, Leipzig, Schwerin. In 1937, he became a member of the Hannover theater, where he sang until 1950 and was a favorite with the audience; 1945–51, he was also the theater's director. In opera, he sang heldentenor parts only (Hüon, Rienzi, Erik, Tannhäuser, Tristan, Siegmund, Siegfried, Alvaro, Radames, Otello, Éléazar, Puccini's des Grieux), but he was also a noted lied interpreter. He recorded only four sides, an abridged version of the final scene from Siegfried. Reference: Kutsch & Riemens I wish to thank Daniele Godor for the picture. |
