Born Gerhard Post, he studied voice in his home town and made his debut in 1928, still under his real name, in Dortmund in Lehár's Zarewitsch. From Dortmund, he went on to Gera, Regensburg, Berlin (Großes Schauspielhaus), Augsburg, Chemnitz and Innsbruck. His longest stay was in Gdańsk/Danzig (1939–44).

So far, he had sung both operetta and opera: Rodolfo, Galba (Die toten Augen by d'Albert) as well as comprimario parts; in operetta: Sou-Chong, Barinkay, Eisenstein, Symon. After WWII, he sang exclusively operetta, mostly at the Metropoltheater Berlin.
