After studying voice in Munich, he sang in Neustrelitz 1928–30, Zürich 1930–32, Bremen 1932–36. The main part of his career was spent at the Bavarian State Opera Munich: 1936–47, and 1950–69. (In between, he sang two seasons in Düsseldorf and one in Kassel.)

He sang everything from Verdi to contemporary music, for instance: Gabriele Adorno, Manrico, Riccardo, Don Carlo, Cavaradossi, Froh, Loge, David, Tannhäuser, Kaiser, Bacchus, Herodes, Pollux (in Die Liebe der Danae), Alessandro Stradella, José, Friedemann Bach (in Graener's opera of the same name), Hugo Wolf's Corregidor, Tambourmajor (in Wozzeck), Amadeus (in Die Zaubergeige by Werner Egk), Budoja (in Palestrina).
