Pölzer was a graduated dentist, but when his voice was discovered, he took lessons in
Vienna and with Anna Bahr-Mildenburg in Munich, and made his debut in Wrocław/Breslau in 1928 (until 1930). From 1930 to
1947, he was one of the pillars of the Bavarian State Opera Munich, and at the same time regularly also of the State Operas in
Vienna and in Dresden. Guest appearances in Frankfurt, Berlin, Venice, Torino, Geneva, at Covent Garden and the Paris Opéra.
He finished his career in the early 1950s at the Vienna Volksoper, and resumed his work as a dentist.
He was primarily a Wagner tenor: Loge, Siegmund, both Siegfrieds, Tannhäuser, Tristan, Rienzi, Parsifal; in addition to
that, he sang Matthias (Evangelimann), Pedro, Florestan, Hans Kraft (Der Bärenhäuter by Siegfried Wagner),
Königssohn (Königskinder by Humperdinck), Max.
Pölzer never recorded commercially; his voice is only preserved by a few live and radio recordings.
