He studied at the conservatory in Leipzig with Eva Fleischer.
He made his debut in 1980 at the Stadttheater in Halle in Die
Bürger von Calais by Wagner-Régeny. He stayed there until 1984, when he moved to the Komische Oper in Berlin.
He often made guest appearances in Leipzig and toured with the Komische Oper.

He made guest appearances at the Berlin Staatsoper (1990, Giustino by Händel), and in Dresden (1992, Belmonte).
