Gaetano Breda
I wish to thank Richard J Venezia for the recording.The below chronology from Roberto Marcocci's invaluable website will certainly be largely complete for the Italian start of Breda's career; less likely for the Spanish-Portuguese part (where was he in 1904?). Marcocci said that Breda moved to South America about 1909, and found a few random appearances in Buenos Aires: in 1909, Canio and Cavaradossi at the Teatro Marconi in June; Almaviva, Rodolfo, José, Turiddu, Cavaradossi, Fra Diavolo and Boito's Faust at the Teatro Coliseo in September/October; another Cavaradossi at the Teatro Marconi in October. In 1917, once again Canio and Cavaradossi at the Teatro Marconi in June; and as late as May 1932, a full stagione at the Teatro Marconi. Of course, it's inconceivable that Breda sang only those few performances in Argentina; rather, Marcocci's finds have to be read as examples, and as a proof that Breda continued his Buenos Aires career at least until 1932. Also, I don't think that he moved to South America only in 1909, since I found that he was in Brazil already in July 1908, singing operetta in Rio de Janeiro; more specifically, he appeared at the Teatro Carlos Gomes in the local premiere of The toreador by Ivan Caryll (given as "Corril"!) and Lionel Monkton, in Italian translation, with Giselda Morosini, Inez Imbimi, Guglielmina Macari, Emilia Darvio, Maria Stellini, Giselda Cumeri, Italo Bertini, Giuseppe Silvani, and the conductor Ettore Vitale.
