Controversy
The Record Collector of September 2009 has an article by Michael Bott titled Two Di Giovannis and the Kalliope Mystery.
Michael Bott is telling us that for a long time the De Giovanni records on Kalliope/Stella/Victory labels were thought to be recorded by Edoardo Di Giovanni/Edward Johnson. Bott further thought that the Odeons recorded by a De Giovanni were also by Johnson until he found out that the singer was Remo De Giovanni. Bott writes that thanks to Roberto Marcocci we know now it is Remo De Giovanni who recorded on Kalliope. To make the matter more confusing, the Kalliope label picture in the record collector shows the name Di Giovanni, while the one I have shows De Giovanni. Kalliope recordings were issued as Kalliope, Stella and Victory. Maybe Michael Bott should have talked to Roberto Marcocci. When I asked Roberto Marcocci if it was the same singer who recorded both on Kalliope and Odeon, he told me:
I don't know. De Giovanni Remo made his debut in 1908 and recorded the Odeons in 1911/12. In my collection, I have some Kalliope but I don't know the year when they were recorded. I know that the Kalliope records were issued in Trieste when Trieste was under Austria. My records were recorded by singers that are listed in the opera company of Trieste's opera house. I suppose that De Giovanni never sang in Trieste's opera house.
Now the Kalliope discography of De Giovanni for the sake of completeness:
