After studies in Rome and a career start in the Italian provinces, he sang already in 1957 and 1958 at the City Center Opera in
New York (Pinkerton and Calaf), and 1959 in San Francisco (Rodolfo). In the 1960s, he graced most of the major Italian stages:
San Carlo in Naples, La Fenice in Venice, Petruzzelli in Bari, Bellini in Catania, Comunale in Florence, Massimo in Palermo, a
lot at the Rome Opera and the Terme di Caracalla from 1958 to 1975... just La Scala never hired him.
Internationally, he sang in Monte Carlo (1960 and 1967), at La Monnaie (1962), the Wexford Festival (1963), in New Orleans (1962,
1966 and 1968), at the Teatre del Liceu (1964), the Vienna Staatsoper (1965), the São Carlos in Lisbon (1965), the
Cincinnati Festival (1965 and 1966), Covent Garden (1966), in Baltimore (1966 and 1967), Ciudad de México (1966 and 1967),
Santiago de Chile (1968) and Munich (1968).
His repertory was focused on verismo: Turiddu, Canio, Chénier, Osaka, Piccolo Marat, Flammen (Lodoletta),
Cavaradossi, Puccini's des Grieux, Ruggero (La rondine); but he also sang Edgardo, Duca, Don Alvaro, Manrico, Don
José or Enzo Grimaldo.
