Aurelio Marcato's life is poorly documented. Following Kutsch and Riemens, all references say he was presumably born in 1902, but without knowing where, and without saying which source there may be for that approximate date. In any case, his career started in 1934, so if he was really born in or about 1902, he must have done something else before his debut; needless to say, any information in that regard is unavailable.

His debut was as Enzo Grimaldo in Modena in early 1934; in March, he already sang in the world premiere of Giuseppe Pietri's Maristella at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. In 1935, he sang at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome for the first time; that theater and the San Carlo would hear him regularly during his short career. In 1935, as well, he arrived also at the Maggio musicale in Florence and in Mantova; in 1936 in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Marseille, at the Paris Opéra, in Brussels and in Bologna; in 1937 in Vienna, Genova and at La Scala. In several of those places, he appeared only in concert (such as at the Opéra or in Vienna, where he sang at the Konzerthaus, in Brussels and in Marseille), and always in his showpiece: Verdi's Requiem.

Marcato returned to La Scala in 1938 and spent the next years primarily at the opera house in Rome and at the San Carlo, but also in Pisa and Brescia. He also sang opera on the radio. His last appearances were in 1945; after that, there is no further information about him available.

Marcato's repertory included Stolzing, Lohengrin, Canio, Don Alvaro, Avito (L'amore dei tre re), Americo (Lo schiavo), Radames, Edgardo, Calaf in Busoni's (not Puccini's!) Turandot, Maurizio or Don José.
