Giuseppe Scarcella
Wordplays on names should be a big no-no, but it's too enticing to state that information on Giuseppe (or Beppino) Scarcella is actually
scarce, and that's putting it mildly. Roberto Marcocci lists a few opera productions with him:
In February 1905, he sang Ernesto at the Teatro Sociale in tiny Chiari.
The same year, he was Gounod's Faust at the Teatro Martinetti in even tinier Garlasco.
In May 1906, he was back to Chiari as Rodolfo.
In December 1906, he sang at the smaller of Bergamo's two theaters, the Sociale, Enzo Grimaldo.
In 1908, he spent the January season at the Teatro Toselli in Cuneo.
Two months later, in March, he sang Almaviva at the Teatro Cavour in Imperia.
And that's it; even if it's probable that this chronology is incomplete (the smaller the places are where a singer appears, the more difficult
is it to find any traces of performances from more than a century ago), it seems more like an attempt at a career, than a career proper.
When his few recordings were made in 1912, he had obviously quit the stage; and those recordings were made in London, so he probably
lived there at the time.
His natural voice is not that bad, and his musicality is absolutely sufficient; the voice production is somewhat amateurish, however. Could he
have been a chorister with a good voice, who tried to be a soloist for a certain period of time? Just a speculation...
