Born Jan Donajski, he studied voice in his home town, and made his debut in the 1894/95 season with
Myszkowski's touring company. In Lemberg/Lviv from 1896 to 1900, he was then mainly a free lancer, although he accepted a contract
with the Prague National Theater in 1902, which however he broke one year later. From 1907 to 1910, he was a member of the Budapest
opera, then he continued as a freelancer again, until giving up his career at the outbreak of World War I. His guest appearances took
him to Zagreb, Belgrade, Ljubljana, Warsaw, Munich or Hamburg. He recorded in Polish, Czech and Serbocroatian.
