He received his training at the Stanislavskij Opera Studio in Moscow. During the war, he was evacuated to Sverdlovsk (today Ekaterinburg). From 1947 to 1957, he was back in Moscow and sang at the Stanislavskij and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater. His repertory included Rodolfo, Lykov, Vladimir (in Dubrovskij), and a lot of contemporary Soviet operas.
