Born into a blue collar family, he was first a locksmith. He studied voice at the evening school of railway engineers.
In 1933, he became a soloist at the Kharkiv opera theater, and in 1935, at the Kiev opera theater, where he spent the rest of his
career. From 1962, he was an assistant stage director at the same theater.
Important roles: Bohun (Bohdan Khmelnytskyj by Dankevych; he sang the role also in the first complete LP recording of that opera),
Petro (Natalka Poltavka), Andrij (Taras Bulba), Gvidon, Faust, Jenik,
Pierre Bezukhov.
