He chose to appear in the West under his Russified name; in his native Ukraine, he is Volodymyr
Hryshko. Born in Kiev on July 28th, 1960, he studied guitar and voice in his native city, where he also made his debut in 1988 as a
trainee at the opera theater; he was a soloist at the same theater from 1990 to 1999. From 1996 to 2006, he was a member of the Mariinskij
in St. Petersburg, and between 1995 and 2008, he sang a total of 44 performances at the New York Met: Alfredo, Rodolfo, Pinkerton, Andrej
Khovanskij, but above all smaller parts in Igrok/The gambler and Vojna i mir/War and peace. He quit the opera stage in the late 2000s, but
continued to sing concerts until the mid-2010s, while starting a second career as a pop singer. From 2006 onwards, he taught voice at the
Kiev conservatory.
