Pekka Nuotio

The CD Opera Arias Recordings 1973-1981, Ondine ODE900-2, containing arias and scenes from L'arlesiana, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Il trovatore, Turandot, Tosca, La fanciulla del West, Manon Lescaut, Mare ja hänen poikansa (composer: Tauno Pylkkänen), Die Walküre, Tristan und Isolde with Jorma Hynninen, is a welcome addition as the artist has never been recorded commercially. He was a first rank Wagnerian tenor, a type that we do not have today. This CD will also demonstrate his capabilities in Italian opera. Nuotio was a very effective Finnish tenor born in 1929 in Viipuri, now located in Russia. He died in 1989 in Helsinki. As he did not record his repertoire, this CD was put together from master tapes from the archives of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. The Finnish arias are a pleasant surprise.

Nuotio made his debut 1955 in a concert in Helsinki. His stage debut took place in 1957 at the National Opera in Helsinki in Rigoletto. His repertoire included Carmen, Pikovaja dama, Otello, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde, Pagliacci, Aida, Il trovatore, Turandot etc. Nuotio sang in New York, Hamburg, Berlin, London, Glasgow, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Sydney etc. He retired in 1982.
