Niels Juël Simonsen
Simonsen was one of the Royal Opera Copenhagen's leading baritones from 1868 to his death – not a very high baritone, one would guess from his roles: Hans Sachs, Hans Heiling, Mozart's Figaro... but way off the mark! His vocal range was so wide that he was able to record this tenor aria (from the incidental music written by Denmark's foremost classical composer, Peter Heise, for a play by Danish writer Ernst von der Recke) in key, without effort, and at the age of 57.
