Angelo Angioletti

The Catalan tenor Jaume Bachs i Rosés, who adopted later the name of Angelo Angioletti, was born in Barcelona on 22 January 1862 and died there on 14 May 1909.

In 1890, he made his debut as a baritone under his real name at the Teatro Miguel de Cervantes in Málaga, singing with the company of José Tolosa. Prominent members of that company included Emma Nevada, Mariano de Padilla, and Dante Del Papa. In 1891, Angioletti sang at the Teatro Calderón (Valladolid), Real (Madrid) and Liceu (Barcelona).

Then he restudied in Paris, and came back as a tenor and as Angelo Angioletti in 1894, appearing as Don José and Wilhelm Meister at the Politeama in Genova. In 1896, he alternated the role of Lohengrin with Viñas at the San Carlo in Naples. The same year, he also sang there in Un ballo in maschera with Magini-Coletti and Buliciova; in van Westerhout's Doña Flor with baritone Carlo Buti and Buliciova; and in Walküre.

In 1897, he sang in Genova and Trieste; in 1898, in Alexandria and at the Costanzi in Rome (in Les huguenots with Degli Abbati, Padovani, Galli, and Borelli-Angelini). He came back to the Costanzi to sing Otello in 1908 with De Luca, Melis and Mugnone.

In 1900, he sang an entire season in Odessa, and in 1905 at the Tivoli Theater in San Francisco. In 1907, he appeared in Bucharest and Porto.

Angioletti sang in the premieres of Raimondo Lulio by Ricardo Villa at the Teatro Lírico in Madrid (June 1902), of Giovanni di Napoli by Joan Manén (Teatre del Liceu, January 1903), Acté (again by Manén and again at the Liceu, December 1903) and Emporium by Enric Morena (Liceu, January 1906).

In 1905, he had to replace Leo Slezak as Tannhäuser at La Scala in Slezak's only fiasco I am aware of. Angioletti specialized in Wagnerian and late Verdi roles.

He was also a composer, publishing songs and one opera (Aurèlia, 1907) as Jaume Bachs.
