Dalmacio González
|
Born Dalmau González Albiol, he usually went by Dalmacio González but, particularly in German-speaking countries, also by
Dalmacio Gonzales. Vocal studies first in Girona, then in Barcelona, where he made his debut at the Teatre del Liceu in 1973; for
the time being, he sang only small parts. After further studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg (with Anton Dermota, among others), he sang his first leading role at the Liceu in 1977: Ugo in Donizetti's Parisina. In 1979, he conquered the USA: New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera (where he would return several times until 1985), San Francisco. 1980 was the year of his debut at the Vienna Staatsoper, where he was almost inevitable as Almaviva throughout the 1980s. Until the end of the 20th century, he sang also at the festivals in Florence, Pesaro and Martina Franca; at the Colón in Buenos Aires; in Parma, Rome, Naples, Bologna, Trieste, Torino, Modena, Catania, Madrid, Bilbao, Hannover, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Bonn, Düsseldort, Munich, Berlin, Los Angeles, Montevideo, and time and again at the Liceu. He focused on belcanto, but also sang Mozart and a lot of lieder recitals (Schubert in particular), fruit of his work with Dermota. Neither his pinched tone nor his labored coloratura are my cup of tea. And his Schubert, Dermota or no Dermota... oh well.
