Machado first sang in a children's choir in his native Barquisimeto (the "musical capital" of Venezuela), and then studied voice in Caracas and
eventually in Madrid with Alfredo Kraus.
He made his debut in 1996 in Caracas as Nemorino and his European debut the same year as Macduff in Las Palmas. Also in 1996, he won the
Francisco Viñas Competition, and the following year Plácido Domingo's Operalia.. A first-rate career ensued:
Lisbon, Parma, Arena di Verona, Rome, Naples (Teatro San Carlo), Madrid (both Teatro Real and Teatro de la Zarzuela), Barcelona (Liceu),
Washington, Los Angeles, Berlin (both Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper), Zürich, Vienna (Staatsoper), New York (Metropolitan Opera), Bologna,
Milano (La Scala), and towards the end of his career, he sang a whole lot at the Bolshoj in Moscow. Repertory: Edgardo, Roberto Devereux,
Pollione, Jorge (Marina), Hoffmann, Don José, Faust, Roméo, Éléazar, Foresto, Carlo (Masnadieri),
Jacopo Foscari, Ernani, Rodolfo (Luisa Miller), Duca, Alfredo, Gabriele Adorno, Don Carlo, Riccardo, Don Alvaro, Enzo Grimaldo, Turiddu,
Roberto (Le villi), Rodolfo (Bohème), Cavaradossi, Pinkerton, des Grieux (Manon Lescaut), Luigi, Calaf, Maurizio,
Andrea Chénier.
From 2021, he sang only occasionally and was primarily a stage director.
