José Maristany

1871 El Masnou – 1932 Buenos Aires

Maristany was born near Barcelona, but a large part of his career took place in South America, where he also found his spouse. He was to get married in Buenos Aires in 1906, and with all his valuables, money and apparel boarded the ship Sirio in Barcelona, on August 3rd. The next day, the Sirio ran onto a shelf off Cabo de Palos on Spain's southeast coast. The ship sank quickly, the engines exploded, the captain and crew left the wreck before all passengers, who fought with knives and guns for access to the lifeboats. Of 822 people on board, 442 died; among the victims was the popular Spanish actress and singer Lola Millanes.

Maristany survived; he clung to a part of the deck that still loomed over the water, and was saved by fishermen after several hours. He had lost everything but his life: his entire belongings – and his voice, obviously not for physical reasons, but due to the shock. He sailed to Buenos Aires ten days later and married, but his voice never recovered, and his career was over. He taught voice in Buenos Aires for the rest of his days.
