He studied in Madrid with Miguel Barrosa and made his debut as a concert singer in 1980. In 1982, he was hired by the Teatro de la Zarzuela in
Madrid, where he sang zarzuela to begin with. But soon, he ventured into opera, as well (first appearance: Macduff in Las Palmas). He had major
success as Pinkerton at the Teatro de la Zarzuela with Yoko Watanabe, and then at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona with Ilona Tokody (1985).
At the Liceu, he was to sing a lot: Pacini's Saffo with Montserrat Caballé in 1987, a production that aroused much interest and
enthusiasm; Mefistofele (1987), Don Carlo (1988), La fiamma by Ottorino Respighi (1990).
Don Carlo was an important role of his; he sang it also at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Liège or in Bologna. His repertory also included
Rodolfo, Edgardo, Foresto, Don Alvaro, Radames, Puccini's des Grieux, Calaf or Cavaradossi. Other places where he sang were Dallas, Washington,
the festivals at Ravenna, Torre del Lago and Santander, Antwerp, San Francisco or London (Earl's Court).
