Originally a teacher in Jamaica and the USA, he studied voice at the Munich academy of music, the Juilliard School in New York City and the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milano, among others with Tito Gobbi and Richard Holm. After winning prizes at the competitions "Voci Verdiane" in Busseto and "Francisco Viñas" in Barcelona, he made his debut in 1976 at the New York City Opera as Don José.

1978 to 1980, he was a member of the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg. The next years, he sang as a freelancer in Glasgow, Cardiff, Braunschweig, Augsburg, Berlin (Deutsche Oper), Coburg, Stuttgart or Klagenfurt. In 1988, he joined the troupe of the theater of Kiel. Further appearances at the Theater des Westens in Berlin, in Würzburg, Cape Town, Prague (regularly), Budapest or Passau.

His most successful roles were Otello and Porgy; he further sang Manrico, Don Alvaro, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan, Florestan, Bacchus, Rodolfo, Pinkerton, Calaf, Hoffmann, and a lot of concert works (Messiah, Elijah, Beethoven's Ninth, Missa solemnis, Rossini's Stabat mater, Petite messe solennelle, Verdi's Requiem...).
